A battery transforms a solar system from a daytime-only saver into a 24-hour energy asset. It stores excess generation, releases it during the evening peak, and (with a smart tariff like Octopus Go or Flux) lets you import cheap overnight electricity and use it later — slashing your bill even on sunless days.
Why a battery is worth it
Without storage, a typical solar home self-consumes 30-40% of its generation; the rest is exported. With a properly sized battery, self-consumption rises to 75-85%. On 30p/kWh import rates and 7p/kWh export, that swing is worth £400-£900 per year — typically paying back the battery in 7-10 years.

If you already have solar, an AC-coupled battery retrofit is fastest (1-2 days, no inverter change). For new installs we prefer hybrid inverters which combine solar and battery on one unit.
